My wife and I were talking this morning when she said, “Be the change you wish to become.” I thought about those words for quite a while as I headed to work—the change I wish to become. It is such a simple yet profound idea. For many people, however, the vision of change far outweighs the drive to do the work required to create it. I strongly believe in living in the present moment. The more I mature and gain life experience, the more apparent it becomes that a key component of happiness is the ability to be present and appreciate each moment for what it is. At the same time, it is important to reflect on who you are, your circumstances, and the environment around you. Then, ask yourself what change you need to make to progress and improve in each of these areas. The desire to grow and imagine a better future is instinctive. To progress, we must understand ourselves. To improve, we must understand our shortcomings, goals, and aspirations. To become the change we desire, we must embody it, trust the direction in which we are moving, and recognise that what we believe we lack may simply be an ability within us that we have not yet understood. Water is formless and shapeless, yet it moulds itself to whatever contains it. It can slip through the smallest cracks or press firmly against a wall. Its ability to retain its essence while adapting its shape is a powerful metaphor for maintaining a constant flow. Stagnation jeopardises water; moving too quickly can create misdirection and a loss of substance. To remain formless and adaptable without losing one’s essence is a sign of true understanding. Belief in who you are is a key stepping stone towards healthy internal dialogue and self-understanding. Belief in who you wish to become is a stepping stone in the pursuit of growth and fulfilment. Understanding the change required to achieve your deepest ambitions is the vehicle that helps you grow into the person you wish to become and create the life you wish to live. Pursuing change with understanding, intention, ambition, and devotion is a powerful part of the search for happiness. Be the change you wish to become.
