It is easy, especially as a young adult, to believe that we know everything. I know that when I was in my late teens, I thought I knew a great deal more than I actually did. I thought I was the master of my realm, and how wrong I was. I think this is a common trait among many people and one that can create a range of problems but, more importantly, can hinder our growth potential.
I was speaking with one of my coaches the other day about his training and coaching regime. Felipe is a master of the art and, for me, one of the most proficient and graceful practitioners on the mat. I endeavour to model my movements on his and hope to one day achieve a portion of that proficiency and grace. One thing that stood out to me about our conversation was his comment about always maintaining the mindset of a student. In order for us to learn and grow, we must always maintain an open mind regarding our ability to learn from every avenue within our lives.
Miyamoto Musashi said, “The teacher is as a needle, the disciple is as thread. You must practice constantly.”
We must always allow open dialogue within our minds so that we can learn, absorb, and be disciples. Once we have absorbed the information and considered our commitment to and belief in those teachings, we can deepen our approach to further learning. If we believe we know everything, we will come to understand nothing.
Our potential is greatly influenced by our ability and openness to learn. This is also one of our greatest avenues for fulfilment, purpose, and happiness. The more we understand about ourselves, each other, and the world itself, the better positioned we are to truly evolve and become the best versions of ourselves.
